How to Keep Animals out of your Garden and Yard

Keep deer out of gardenIt takes a lot of work to make a yard look nice or a garden to produce lots of fruits or vegetables.  The last thing you want is all of your hard work being destroyed by animals.

Don’t get me wrong, I love animals, and I mean just about every kind of animal.  I just don’t want them ravaging my garden or yard.  So the question is how do you stop deer, rabbits, raccoons, opossums, birds, squirrels, dogs, cats and any other animal from getting into your yard or garden?

Well I am going to give you some suggestions.

My Story

Before we delve into that let me tell you what made me interested how to keep animals out of your garden and yard.  I have gardened for years.  This all stemmed from my father who had a huge garden in our backyard.  I remember all the fun (okay wasn’t always fun as a kid but still great memories) we had when we got to enjoy the fruits of our labor.

Fast forward many years later when I decided to make a small raised garden in my backyard.  I made a few mistakes but nothing too terrible.  I started getting some nice fresh basil (that really took off), some tomatoes, some asparagus, and even some peppers.

Basil in gardenAfter a while I noticed while the basil was really going crazy it had a pungent smell.  The smell was definitely off putting.  With a good wash the smell went away.  As I said I love animals and we had two indoor cats at the time and one dog.

One day we one of our cats was going crazy at the window facing the garden.  I ran over to see what was going on.  Well there was a tomcat marking his territory on my prized basil.  This did not make me happy to say the least.  By prized basil, this plant had stems as big around as my thumb. Oh I forgot to mention I cooked in an Italian restaurant for 7 years so I use basil all the time in my home cooking.

You can imagine that was not a pleasant surprise.  I had to do something but what?keep cats out of garden

Keep Cats out of My Garden

My garden was a small garden that was about 15 sq feet.  So there was not much space that I had to worry about.  So what is it that I actually did.  First thing I did was do some research on natural remedies.  These included homemade concoctions, but not of them actually seemed to work.  What did work for me was a motion sensor sprinkler.  It didn’t take much space in the corner of the garden.  That was good because it wasn’t that large of a garden.

I can remember the first day I set it up.  I waited patiently for it to go off.  After staring out the window for about an hour I decided to just to go about my normal day. I sat down to watch a baseball game on TV and about 30 minutes later I heard a click and the normal sound of a sprinkler.  This was followed by a yowl of a cat.  I love animals but I had to laugh when I heard that sound.motion sensor sprinkler

I think it was only tripped about 3-4 more times over the course of a week, then nothing.  Problem solved. Now my basil was able to grow and smell, well like basil should.  I also felt much, MUCH better about eating it again.

I will have more information and other ways to keep cats out of your garden in the near future.

That Started my Journey

Okay so that is what started my journey in keeping animals out of the garden.  It is what really got me interested in helping others find solutions to their animals issues in their gardens as well.  So I stared doing some research to help others with how to:

Each area I will discuss things that work for the particular animals.  One thing to keep in mind is that many animals are very smart.  They will learn not to fear the item or thing you are using if you only use one approach.  So it is not a bad idea to use more than one method and change them up occasionally.   keep squirrels out of garden

We have already discussed one of the ways that works well on many different animals and that is motion sensor sprinklers.  Check out my number one recommendation for sprinklers that work. Another good one is ultrasonic motion sensors.

Visual scare tactics may also work well for some animals as well as scent deterrents.  As I delve deeper into each animal some work for most, but may cause other animals to come in that are equally destructive to your yard or garden.  Oh, and yes all of these methods work equally well in a garden or a yard and all are considered humane.
